Why I Go to Africa and Why I Love it

by david on July 8, 2018

As I was batching it one weekend, it is of little wonder that my mind tended to wander from time to time. On one such occurrence I found myself daydreaming about my upcoming trip to the Caprivi Strip in September. My mind quickly changed gears from the itinerary to why I was looking forward to going. Why I am looking forward to going are great reasons for anyone to go. Here are some of my thoughts and I hope to encourage a few others to start thinking about a visit. First my thoughts, and then a few general reasons.

Reason 1/13

I love camp. Sitting around the fire after a long day in the bush with my friends is hard to beat. Reliving the events of the day with a beverage of choice in hand is one of life’s great pleasures, in my humble opinion. The pitch blackness of the African night is fought back by the flickering flames of the fire. The smoke mingled with the smell of meat grilling and the taste of whatever is in your glass come together, often overloading your olfactory senses, and the sounds of the night intermingling like the varied instruments of an orchestra. The grunts of a lion, the sawing of a leopard are the base notes. The whinnying of the zebras from the middle and the insects are the high notes. Beautiful.

One fire for warmth and light, and one for cooking. Fine china and linen in the middle of the bush. African braai (BBQ) at it’s best. One fire for warmth and light, and one for cooking. Fine china and linen in the middle of the bush. African braai (BBQ) at it’s best.
