AWOL ? What I’ve been up to for the last 60 days

I apologize for being absent for so long, but, as the old saying goes, I have been as “busy as a one-legged man in a ____ kicking contest”.  The first weekend in January was a blast (no pun intended) on our annual pilgrimage to North Carolina’s outer banks to hunt ducks.  We all had a great time, and the ducks actually cooperated for a change.  The eight of us took 38 ducks over the two-day hunt.  While this was far short of our limits, everyone got to take home enough for a meal and a few for the freezer.

The weather was sunny and not very cold, and the only thing that kept the ducks flying was the wind.  The wind was perfect in that it blew hard enough to keep the ducks from getting comfortable in one spot, but not so hard it kept us from getting out into the open water.  The ducks flew best at first light, with last light giving us a few hours each day of some pretty fine shooting.  From late morning to early afternoon, all we did was spot ducks at a distance, crouch down in the blind in anticipation of them getting closer, and then watch the ducks stay at a distance.

At duck camp, we always eat well.  We dined on roasted venison tenderloins, grilled quail, and pesto pasta with asparagus and chicken.  Needless to say, there was a lot of wine to accompany the meal.  Beer, bourbon, and brandy were all on hand for all of the before-and-after-dinner down times.  There is something about a snifter of fine brandy or bourbon, and a cigar, on the back deck after a great meal at hunting camp that cannot be replicated at any other time or place.  I guess it has to do with the magic of hunting camp along with great friends and old stories.  This trip was no exception.  The conversation was exceptional and everyone was polite enough not to mention that the same stories and jokes were recycled from previous years.
